HTC improved just about everything that I found wrong with its predecessor the HTC Dream and at the same time retained everything that I loved about the phone. The Dreams bulk design has been thrown out the window and replaced with a much slimmer and sexy body, the bulky QWERTY slide-out keyboard has now been replaced by an initiative on-screen cousin and finally all the little nimbly bugs associated with the first release of the android OS have also been ironed out to provide . If you are after an ultra sexy, amazingly responsive and smooth handset get your hands on a little bit of Magic now.

HTC Diamond 2 does an admirable job at playing back video with no skipping and at a reasonable frame rate.  The most notable design difference between the Touch Diamond 2 and the Touch Diamond is an upgrade to the size of the display. The original Touch Diamond housed a 2.8 inch screen while the HTC Touch Diamond 2 now sports a whopping 3.2 inch display. It would have been great to see HTC not stop at only upgrading the display size but also focusing more on improving other display qualities such as the resolution, apart from an increase in size all other display specification remain identical to the original Diamond.

The Original Diamonds rear casing was a unique diamond etched design, lending the phone a real distinctive look and feel, well for better or for worse HTC had decided to eliminate this design element from the Diamond 2 and we are now left with a flat glossy black cover that is still prone to those unwanted fingerprints as the original. Was it a wise decision; well I’ll leave that up to you to decide.

When it comes to Windows Mobile devices, the original Touch Diamond was the king of the class, it was by far the best selling Windows Mobile device of all time, and rightly so. It brought a much welcomed breath of fresh air to a staling line up of phones, with its stylish design and superb performance in was miles ahead of the curve.

We now welcome the WinMo’s king’s successor the HTC Touch Diamond 2, with an all new design including a larger screen and overall improvements to its user interface, the question now remains – has to go what it takes to ascend to the throne as the next king?

I’m going to get straight to the point – the HTC Magic is primarily designed for online functionality as opposed to multimedia functionality so doesn’t expect too much loving on the multimedia front. You are going to have to ask yourself what you value more, internet connectivity and performance or multimedia functionality. If you answered multimedia, then the Magic is not for you. Sure it has the ability to play a small selection of video files ranging from mp4’s to 3gp files and yeh it can play a selection of audio formats. HTC have even taken the steps to actual include a media player this time around but multimedia is not its forte. 

As expected internet functionality is clearly the area in which the Magic shines. Web browsing is amazing, with unbelievable fast load times, and a very clean interface to boot. Thanks to Android the home screen has a Google search bar, so the answers to your questions are always only a click away, you will also find the added inclusion of a dedicated youtube player, and other amazingly useful google applications such as Google Maps, Calendar , Gmail and the ever popular Google Talk . For your application needs the android Market has been included yet again and it has come a look way since its launch. There might be only 3500 applications currently on display which might seem insignificant in comparison to Apple’s 35,000 apps via the App store, but the quality of the apps on display are truly impressive.

Of the bat I have to admit I’m pretty fond of the Magic’s design. It’s smooth curvy shape and glossy finish is a tremendous improvement over the militaristic design utilised for the Dream. The first noticeable difference between the two handsets is HTC’s decision to drop the QWERTY keyboard a much welcomed decision in my opinion, not only has this resulted in the phone offering a much slimmer profile but the overall weight of the phone has dropped by 40 odd grams. The bulky QWERTY slide-out keyboard has now been replaced by an initiative on-screen cousin thanks to Cupcake. 

The Dream was synonymous for its distinctive chin design and HTC has decided to retain this design element for the Magic. The chin is a small, curved lip around the base of the handset designed to not only give the phone a distinctive look but it actual helps the phone sit more naturally and comfortable in the palm of your hand. The phones shape allows for really easy single hand operations to be performed without any hassle this is aided by the clickable trackball tucked away just below the display. The Magic is amazingly more single hand friendly then the Apple iPhone could ever be.
